For many reasons you may find you and your family are in need of in-home caregiving services for a loved one. Aging and Community Services maintains an information list of individuals who offer to provide in-home care for older adults and persons with disabilities.
There are several very important issues to consider before using the Caregiver List.
- Aging and Community Services DOES NOT review, evaluate, recommend, meet with or in any other way check the backgrounds, experience or credentials of the individuals who ask to be added to the Caregiver List.
- Those on the Caregiver List are NOT employees of Aging and Community Services.
- The Caregiver List is simply an information tool to assist you in your search for assistance. Aging and Community Services is not providing either a reference for or an endorsement of any of the individuals on the list.
- Everyone who uses this list IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for calling, interviewing, checking references, following up, hiring, paying and filing tax reports for the caregiver(s) you select.
- You should be especially CAREFUL when hiring a caregiver for a live-in position.
We strongly suggest you do the following before hiring a caregiver:
- Talk with every reference provided by the caregiver and ask if the reference actually employed the caregiver, the dates of employment, specific examples of both satisfactory and unsatisfactory performance, and any issues the reference wished he/she had known about the caregiver before hiring him/her.
- Ask for details about every certification listed by the caregiver, including what the certification means, the date of qualification, whether additional training or continuing education is required and/or has been completed, and whether the caregiver can provide written proof of his/her certification(s) and education.
- Discuss in detail with the caregiver the requirements of the position, including such things as lifting, cooking, bathing, housekeeping, laundry, simple “nursing”, errands, transportation, hours, back-up plans related to health or weather issues, emergency contact numbers, etc.
- Call the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration or a tax advisor to learn about reporting requirements for any wages paid to a caregiver.
